Wander around this twenty-block area to get a sense of Sacramento's history. Stop by the Convention and Visitor's Bureau and pick up a brochure on walking tours of the city's historic architecture. (Many Victorian homes and other buildings in the area are now occupied by state government offices.) After an enjoyable tour, relax amid Capitol Park's beautiful landscaping and browse its memorials, including the expansive Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. Other must-see attractions in the area include Capitol Mall and the Stanford Mansion.

Established in 1849, this historic, 28-acre cemetery is the final resting place for many California pioneers, not to mention 20,000 early Sacramento residents. Visit the graves of city founder, John A. Sutter, Jr., and that of Mark Hopkins, one of the railroad's "Big Four." Grounds are well-maintained, and some graves are planted with roses and other flowering shrubs. Other graves are marked with headstones of carved wood rather than marble. Guided tours are offered every second and fourth Saturday at 10am, March to November.
