Wander around this twenty-block area to get a sense of Sacramento's history. Stop by the Convention and Visitor's Bureau and pick up a brochure on walking tours of the city's historic architecture. (Many Victorian homes and other buildings in the area are now occupied by state government offices.) After an enjoyable tour, relax amid Capitol Park's beautiful landscaping and browse its memorials, including the expansive Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. Other must-see attractions in the area include Capitol Mall and the Stanford Mansion.

Established in 1849, this historic, 28-acre cemetery is the final resting place for many California pioneers, not to mention 20,000 early Sacramento residents. Visit the graves of city founder, John A. Sutter, Jr., and that of Mark Hopkins, one of the railroad's "Big Four." Grounds are well-maintained, and some graves are planted with roses and other flowering shrubs. Other graves are marked with headstones of carved wood rather than marble. Guided tours are offered every second and fourth Saturday at 10am, March to November.

NAPA. In a valley of culinary and oenological treats, the Wine Train may be one of the area's more unique experiences. Tour Napa aboard elegant Pullman lounge and dining cars (circa 1915-17), whose Honduran mahogany, polished brass, imported linens, and etched glass hark back to a time when such luxuries were reserved for the absurdly rich. Passengers may elect for brunch, lunch, or dinner trips, all of which include seasonal gourmet dishes and opportunities to sample the finest Californian wines. Round-trip journeys run 36 miles from Napa to St. Helena and last about three hours. Jackets are preferred but not mandatory at dinner.

Take a leisurely drive down Seventh to Sixteenth Streets and from E to I Streets. Enjoy viewing these elaborate Victorian homes nestled comfortably along tree-lined streets.
