RANCHO CORDOVA. Grab a raft, escape the scorching summer heat, and cool off in the American River. Drifting on the currents promises a refreshing afternoon and the opportunity to see beautiful parts of the 5,000-acre American River Parkway. The trip takes 3 to 4 hours and goes from Sunrise Boulevard to Goethe Park. A shuttle then transports you back to the starting point. Rafts for 4 to 12 people are available, as are one-person kayaks. Reservations for raft rentals are accepted.

If you have kids, don't miss this one! Along with a 40-minute tour of the factory, you get to sample any of the more than 150 candies Jelly Belly makes, from all 50 flavors of the famed beans to chocolates and candy corn. Although tours are offered daily, the factory doesn't operate on weekends so guests see a video about the candy-making process instead.

NAPA. In a valley of culinary and oenological treats, the Wine Train may be one of the area's more unique experiences. Tour Napa aboard elegant Pullman lounge and dining cars (circa 1915-17), whose Honduran mahogany, polished brass, imported linens, and etched glass hark back to a time when such luxuries were reserved for the absurdly rich. Passengers may elect for brunch, lunch, or dinner trips, all of which include seasonal gourmet dishes and opportunities to sample the finest Californian wines. Round-trip journeys run 36 miles from Napa to St. Helena and last about three hours. Jackets are preferred but not mandatory at dinner.

A variety of other trips is offered, including brunch, lunch, dinner, and sightseeing cruises. Reservations are required.

OLD SACRAMENTO. This popular attraction takes visitors on a 40-minute train ride along the Sacramento River. Guests enjoy cruising along in open-air gondolas and vintage coaches pulled by real steam locomotives, marveling at the scenery and enjoying the company of friends and family. Special theme trains and events are also well-received, especially the ones just for kids!
